CE "Optimising Bone and Muscle Health in Older Adults" on 28th March 2026

NUS alumni and our members just got a little update on how to stay healthy through the talk on "Optimising Bone and Muscle Health in Older Adults" on 28th March 2026.

Organised by the Medical Alumni Association and the Office of Alumni Relations, the talk was well attended, with 141 participants, both in person and online. Dr Ng Lee Beng (Family Medicine Specialist and Senior Consultant at Singapore General Hospital) & Mr David Hoi (Exercise Physiologist at UFit) were the speakers.

Key takeaway points from the talk are:

1.  Being too old for exercise is a myth. Regardless of your age,

  • Start low and go slow to start your exercise routine,

  • Increase the intensity of your exercise progressively, and

  • Build a routine of regular physical activity into your lives.

For alumni who already have health issues such as osteoporosis, they should work with their doctors on integrating exercise into their daily lives.

2.  Eating adequately and healthily is important, as muscle and bone need food as building material. Add the following to your diet.

  • Protein,

    • For Seniors 50 years old and above, they should aim for 3 servings (20 - 30g per serving) of protein daily

    • Plant protein is not inferior to animal protein; beans, nuts, grains, vegetables are also good sources of protein.

  • Calcium (from milk, vegetables e.g. cauliflower, broccoli),

  • Vitamin D (from egg yolks, deep sea fishes, low fat milk, mushrooms),

  • Fruits & vegetables (which provide vitamins, minerals and antioxidants)
